Trump’s actions signal a move toward institutionalizing people with disabilities, advocates warn (NPR, July 1st, 2026)
Since the 1960s, there have been major moves and legislation made to protect disabled people from being institutionalized and to allow them to gain proper access to jobs and public education. This includes focusing more on accommodation and support rather than isolation or finding some kind of cure. However, many disability advocates warn that the administration's recent shift of the Special Education Department fusing into the Department of Health could reverse progress made by bringing the focus back to medical cures and potential institutionalization.
Back in June, two major disability-related laws, Section 504 and The Americans with Disabilities Act, are argued by the Department of Justice to not necessarily require states to uphold mainstream services, reflecting how different agencies can reflect on and interpret certain civil rights. Many families of disabled people are also concerned about the declining shift from accommodations and services, especially children in school settings and the programs they provide. Magda Nakassis of Maryland for instance is the mother of a non-verbal autistic son, who expressed her growing concern over disabilities like autism becoming politicized. She says quote, "his right to an education is not a medical issue, but rather a question of equity and access in a society that often pushes disabled people to the margins."

Major Social Security Change May Help Millions Manage Disability Benefits (Newsweek, July 22nd 2026)
About 10 Million Americans rely on Social Security for disability benefits, but the process of claiming these benefits can be lengthy and difficult for many. However, The Social Security Administrations (SSA) announced an update on their online navigation tools that expand accessibility and digital services. CEO of the 91 Capital Group Kevin Thompson stated in an interview that the modernization of Social Security is past due, saying that quote "Moving more services online, allowing people to submit forms electronically, track disability claims, and check their application status should make the system more efficient...The challenge is that technology doesn't always match the reality of the people who rely on these benefits.”
Specifically, the update allows people to receive immediate updates on the status of any filed disability claims without needing to wait for the mail. It also allows multiple adjudication forms online to be requested at a time, including Recent Medical Treatment, Medication Information, and Job History. These updates give hope to applicants that the process with Social Security offices will be easier, with claims being reviewed in a timely manner while giving accurate updates and results.
