Guest column: Why are people with disabilities required to repeatedly prove they qualify for Medicaid? (Inforum, August 12th 2026)

Medicaid is one of the most used health insurances in the nation, being able to cover appointments, medications, equipment, transportation, and programs. Because of the wide range of coverage and services offered, it is a popular choice among those with disabilities who need lifelong medical care. Even so, author Matthew Beilke emphasizes the recurring frustration with having prove your eligibility over and over again, needing to do calculations of your income and submit important documents.

For people with disabilities, whether physical or mental, having to repeatedly prove your condition worthy enough for coverage is an exhausting and dehumanizing process. Matthew Beilke understands shifting factors like jobs or income to be determined with insurance, but questions why the system cannot differ between that and permanent disabilities, acting as if they could change or go away overnight. On top of that, Beilke states that waiting for approval can be agonizing for insurers not knowing if they will still be covered, making people lost trust and a sense of security towards health insurances despite needing them.

Social Security Announces Disability Benefits Update For 14 New Conditions (Newsweek, August 12 2026)

On Tuesday, August 11th, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that fourteen new medical conditions will be included in its Compassionate Allowances list program. The purpose of the program is for applicants with serious medical conditions to be identified easier so that financial benefits are given quicker and more efficiently. The program lists three-hundred and fourteen conditions in total, and as of the new addition, around 1.2 million Americans have now been approved for benefits.

The new fourteen conditions include genetic disorders/syndromes linked with seizures and hindered brain development, as well as rare forms of cancer such as melanomas and sarcomas. Though initial disability decision still takes around six to eight months, SSA figures have shown that said disability decisions were being issued 34 days faster this year than July 2025. SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano assure that "Social Security is strengthening our disability programs and making the disability determination process better, faster, and higher-quality to serve the American public...to deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need help fast.”
